2.4 million new healthcare jobs will be added as industry continues to grow; an MBA in Healthcare Administration can boost careers

Published Date: 04-07-2021

As the healthcare industry continues to expand to the tune of 2.4 million new jobs in the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be more need for leadership in the sector than ever before.

The healthcare arena includes hospitals and physician practices as well as many connected industries such as technology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Professionals looking to find opportunity in this growing marketplace can consider pursuing a fully online MBA in Healthcare Administration from Waukesha, Wis.-based Carroll University.

“Those pursuing an MBA in Healthcare Administration will step into roles such as clinician lead or supervisor in non-clinical roles such as finance, IT, HR or supply chain management,” said Katie McCarthy, Ph.D., assistant professor of applied business analytics at Carroll. “It also opens up career paths in management, director-level and C-suite executive roles.”

In many organizations, a graduate degree leads directly to a formal leadership position, she said.

The program at Carroll provides a deep understanding of systemic challenges from perspectives such as finance, law, human resources and other areas. Understanding those resources through a healthcare administrator lens creates a well-rounded professional able to step into leadership roles throughout the industry.

“If you’re a problem solver, this is a great time to be in healthcare,” McCarthy said.

As the industry continues to expand and shift to meet changing demands, from access to healthcare to changing reimbursement, leaders will be needed in every niche of healthcare. As mental health practices expand, and specialties such as physical therapy continue to meet the needs of an aging population, each healthcare organization will need leadership with a deep understanding of the resources, operations and vision to keep the practice stable. Medical device manufacturers continue to see innovation and will evolve relationships with patients and insurers to meet needs. An emerging field in the healthcare world is analytics that track and evaluate the large quantity of data on everything from cost to quality.

Whether healthcare workers are looking to advance in their careers, or professionals from outside the industry are seeking a new path after the tumultuous coronavirus pandemic, the MBA in Healthcare Administration can provide the right tools to equip each graduate to be part of a thriving and growing industry.
